Why are graphics such a big deal now?

Do you think if developers spent less time and resources turning games into 60 USDs worth of eye candy that we'll start getting better games? I'm not saying that today's games aren't good, far from it. Maybe I'm still from the older generation and this also goes along with new CGI cartoons and movies. But it seems that everyone is turning themselves into graphic whores.

What's wrong with less than exceptional graphics? What's wrong with less than perfect voice acting, what's wrong with games that don't have 50+ hours of gameplay material? This notion that we have to have more this, better that really gets to me. Remember back in the older days of SNES, N64 we've had so many companies producing some bad ass games. Not to say, every game out there was awesome *Cough* Superman64 but still we've had so many great names out there that people didn't have to feel intimidated about letting the guys that didn't have the triple name titles a chance. Also, I'm really tired of seeing games like Sleeping Dogs get bashed for no reason because they're so many GTA loyalist out there that whenever developers develop a game similar to it, it gets thrown under the bus, or looked down upon. I played Sleeping Dogs, I thought it was a great game, despite some minor noob glitches such as being able to smash a thug against a car and the car going flying but that's a minor gripe.

Are there any new ideas left out there? Again coming from the older generation I'm finding myself not interested in anything that is being produced now. It all just seems like repackaged goods. Perfect example, I'm sure you guys have heard of the new TMNT animation show coming out. . . Ops did I say "Animation"? I meant to say CGI, yes YES ! They're making yet another CGI piece of crap ( not literally ) but I mean come on TMNT? Next we'll be seeing Megaman come back in CGI. Again, what's wrong with doing things old school?

In short, there has to be a line where some things just end, or at least slow down. If you're in the US you know that the 8 years of Bush and 4 years of Obama hasn't done any major justices for the US, though now it is turning in the right direction. We the people and the developers can only do so much. If they keep pushing technology forward they'll expect us to accommodate for that and some people just can't. If they increase production quality in MMOs, in Games, in anything are you willing to pay extra for it? Probably if you're in good a financial situation but most of us will, but cut back a little on it. I for one am a huge abuser of Gamefly, why? Because I just can't buy 60USDs worth of games every week. That also hurts the developers as well, They put so much more work into now games WHILE at the same time getting the same amount of money back that they were getting more than 10 years ago. During the SNES years developers sold games for 50USD a cartridge. During the 64 years developer sold 64 cartridges for 50USDs and the special editions for 60. Fast forward 15 years and they're only earning 10USD more per game while in a hurting economy.

Something is evidently wrong here. Why do we have to push the bar so much so quickly? I for one would be more than happy with games that have GameCube graphics, at least we're able to correctly identify what is what and who is who. But all these Gears of War production quality game, to me, is just a waste of your money, and theirs. They're just freaking games, you play them, you enjoy them, and then you move onto the next one. The DreamCast years were the best but with PS2s silly DVD gimmick people quickly forgot about the games and as a result, one of the best systems (imo) died out.

Hamelin , why did they have to modernize the game graphics? What, were they inferior to La Tale and Maple Story, Pi Story's? So What ! The reason why Wind Slayer didn't get the recognition it deserve was because the game itself, the competitor games were just superior in every way. Instead of just improving the game's appearance they should've worked on the aspects of the game, kept the graphics the same ( with a frame or 2 added to each animation which isn't asking much ) Improving the games graphics just burdens the developer into having to put more effort, more money into the game and expecting us to compensate for their added investments.

I detest mainstream gaming. I hate ps3 games that you can buy a strategy guide for. I hate cinematic cut scenes in the middle of games. My biggest peeve is when I go to gamesite and they show a preview for a new game or update and instead of showing the actual game play they show a 3 minute cinematic cartoon or cut scene. It's just a statement on the current generation and the shorter attention span and over focus on detail. It's not a bad thing it's everywhere in televison and media and now in gaming. When you consider a SNES game could cost $50.00 in 1991 and a ps3 game cost $60.00 today you think well that's not that much of a difference but there is. In 1991 a $50 game would cost $84 today. And that $60 game today would only cost $35 in the 1991. So actually games are a lot cheaper now in this economy then it was in the 90s. A lot of this has to do with the break away from cartridge based gaming and converting to cd. Back to graphics I love 2d games and most of the games I play are indy games I buy from Steam or Desaru. I wish developers would go back to focusing on gameplay and not graphics. There are too many mmo's that look like WoW. And what is the need to have to play a game with a mouse and keyboard? Gaming should be fun and aquire game pads. If you need a keyboard and a mouse to play game you've already overthought it. (and yes I played both Windslayers with a gamepad it was very possible and made it easier to level and gave a good advantage in pvp). At the current direction I think games will end up with perfect movie digitized quality with real actors and far worse control. This is the generation of pushing limits, it's the generation of greed and excess. I'm grateful for the nintendo handheld's keeping 16 bit style gaming alive. I don't think graphics make the game. And with new software and technology games are cheaper to make. If they moved the focus away from the 3d and focused more on content and story like in "Chrono Trigger"(one of the greatest games ever made) there would be more hit games at cheaper prices.

I was talking to my older cousin about the most expensive game he ever bought. He told me "Guantlet" for the NES was the first game he ever saw over $50 and that was in 1987. Today that game would cost $97. I can't imagine paying that much for a game.

Oh gosh I totally forgot about game value comparison analogy ! It's even worse than I thought. But this is exactly what I'm talking about. If developers were able to simply focus on the core gameplay and less about making exceptional boob mechanics they could say themselves allot of money and be able to stay in business. The fact that so many companies are going bankrupt can be a obvious sign that developers are trying to win players over by simply making their games pretty. I can't possibly imagine a culprit of this than CyberConnect2's Asuma's wraith.

I could hardly care about the story lol.

I look for content. Not graphics < okay I lie. Not TERRI-FSIOYQPJCV graphics. But livable.
Sub class? You're in.
Good skill animation? You're in.
Bad Model? Don't care as long as I don't feel like its from the 60s < exaggeration

Omer actually reviews about every game he can and posts a video in which he non-stop talks like crazy lol.
Bad thing is that he rarely updates his videos from major updates but then again there are tons for him to do.

Anyways, I like the boob mechanics (don't even argue with me) but really they should focus on content, then community, expand graphics (a bit), expand updates like PvP, and then further expand graphics after donors simmer in and buy stuff. And Valkyrie, don't forget about Perfect World. Also, I should try Asuma's wraith lol. Take a Screenie of the character creation and big boobs maybe? "o -o

Elsword is a good game with lots of content and less boob mechanics. < Lying but really lots of content, good modelling, good skills, side-scrolling like WS 1/2, and a good direction. Okay, maybe their character Rena has big boobs and they jiggle a lot lol but the game is really good. I mean they have like Warrior, Mage, Archer, Nasod, Nasod Princess (actually diff from Nasod), and even Cannon Shooter (desu desu kid lol with a huge arse cannon). Anyways, give Elsword a shot, Valkyrie.

I have played Elsword but unfortunately it was during a time where my PC was rather crabby and didn't play it for long due to me being unable to play with other players. I have played several games like it including Grand Chase so I really had no desire to go back.

I've played Perfect World as well but I can't see why you mentioned it.

That's why I play as a girl lol. would rather be a lolicon and stare at one all day than be homo and stare at a guy all day....

The way I've always seen it was, as long as I know what gender a person is I couldn't care less what character they played. That being said I've never once asked a person for their age, gender, location. That's always been voluntarily mentioned to me.
