Drawing sprites.
Has anyone ever thought about drawing character sprites to get a sense of how difficult it is on the developers to produce new class for example, more monsters, bosses etc. If you done it how long did it take? How difficult was it? I've been wanting to do some for along time now, should I give it a try?
yeah...
I bought a bamboo splash tablet at Bestbuy for $40 and drew some sprites when I was messing around with game maker. I never got to much into it but did try some simple animations. Seems like it took 6-8 frames to make a fluid looking walk, jump, and kick movement. And keeping the art consistant was a real pain. I would have to be paid a lot to do that to make a full game. But before I did that I opened the files on an old game on my pc called "federation booker" which is a 2d wrestling game,(the original version of the hit ipad game wrestling revolution) and saw how many different animations the guy had for punching while wearing different shirts and acessories. It was really mind blowing.

What made you decide to buy the tablet and experiment with sprinting? Ever considered doing it again sometime?
....
Yeah, I was messing around on the Kongergate and gamesite Yo Yo games and saw what people were creating and believed for 10 secs. I could do that. I wanted to try to make a simple 2d fighting game but game maker was a real let down for someone with no previous programming experience in terms of manuals and tutorials. I'm also not the greatest artist but I still use my tablet to make offensive comic strip parodies of my friends. There are a lot of 8 bit art websites if you want to learn and errhhhmmm copy ...good pixeling techniques. It's fun to run a nintendo emulator on your computer pause it, then open your windows snipping tool and cut out a picture of say mega man then open it in windows paint and zoom in and look at each individual pixel and get an idea of how they did it in the old days.

Re: Drawing sprites.
Lol yeah every gamer dreams of making their own MMO at one point but most don't have the will or patients to do so, I know I'm one of those people. I can draw sprites no problem its just the time required that usually gets me. I'm familiar with C++ and Java but I just can't bring myself to spend so much time doing it, well at least by myself.
Re: Drawing sprites.
Not sure if you can call these "sprites"
^ Some minstrel outfit I drew.
I'ma try attacking next.

I'm always drawing up fantasy costumes, but they're never relevant to any discussions I engage in : (
Re: Drawing sprites.
I think that's more like concept art. Making sprite for a game isn't hard, it just takes a long time. You do pixel work right?

I used to like back in 2006 ~ 2008 when I knew nothing other than Ms.Paint.......... I tried it recently but I suck horrid at pixel art.
Re: Drawing sprites.
It probably would be more effective, I think pixel art works better with scaling than normal drawings?8bit wrote:Pshhhh, Try again! I think you'd be great at it.
